Description

Located on Lake Titicaca, Taquile Island has a colorful history. It was used as an Alcatraz-style prison by Spanish colonialists, but today, the island is inhabited by 3,000 Quechua-speaking Taquileños. The locals grow crops such as corn, broad beans and quinoa, in the pre-Inca lands in the mountains. Thanks to their mainly vegetarian diet, the locals are said to live an average of 90 to 100 years. The island is largely intact of modernity, there is not a bicycle, much less a vehicle can be observed. Taquile is known for its crafts that are made by men. The floating islands of the Uros, an ancient ethnic group of people living on Lake Titicaca since pre-Inca times. They still maintain their original lifestyle.
