Description
Learn more about Brazilian history and the city’s post-Olympic legacy by walking through Rio’s Downtown. Visit the Olympic Boulevard (new harbor area) with the Kobra Mural, the Valongo Wharf, the Museum of Tomorrow, the Monastery of Saint Benedict, Praça XV, and the Confeitaria Colombo (closed on Sundays). Start your tour by having a tour guide that will pick you up from your hotel so you can explore the many hidden gems in Rio’s Downtown area. Learn more about the African influence in Brazil by starting at the Valongo Wharf, the most recent addition to the city’s list of Unesco World Heritage Sites. Then visit the Kobra Mural, one of the biggest graffiti walls in the world, to see the five different ethnic groups represented in a vibrant geometric background. This mural was created by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra. After taking a few photos, you will proceed along Olympic Boulevard in the direction of the Museum of Tomorrow, a cutting-edge science center whose mission is to investigate and challenge all the potential paths for building the planet’s future and the future of humanity. After exploring the future, visit the Monastery of Saint Benedict to experience the contrast between the simple exterior and the interior covered in golden ornaments, a legacy from the Baroque era. You will see the Rio 2016 Olympic Cauldron, made by American artist Anthony Howe before you reach Rio’s historic streets. You can see one of the former imperial palaces and discover more about significant events in Brazilian history that took place nearby at the Praça XV.
